THE INDIAN EMPIRE ILLUSTRATED. 21 greased, is placed a semicircular slide of hollowed wood, with two handles, to which a loopis attached. In this novel conveyance the traveller seats himself, and, holding; by thehandles, is launched from the higher to the lower bank of the river with astonishin<?celerity; a thin cord at the same time remains attached to the slide, from either side ofthe river, for the purpose of recovering it, or of pulling the traveller from the lower tothe higher bank. Other jhoolas in the mountains vary a little in their construction : half-a-dozeustout worsted ropes are stretched across the river, and fastened to a projectingbuttress on either side. On these ropes runs a block of wood, which is drawnbackwards and forwards to either side of the stream, by means of strings attachedto it. There are other loops which pass round the body of the passenger, who, thussecured, swings off from the buttress, and is hauled across. In this manner goats andsheep are conveyed
