Thisentire shore line of a space of abouttewnty miles is inhabitated by a bandof Indians, who dwell in permanenthomes after the manner of the whiteman. Pasture fences inclosing cattleand horses, garden plots of potatoes,and Indian maize could be seen andwe were kept busy dodging the gullnets set out from the shore line. Birchbark canoes, sewed with deer sinewand seamed with pitch from the firtrees were moored all along where awell beaten path gave evidence of
