Hokianga Island, Ohiwa Harbour, Whakatane, Ohope, New Zealand


In April 1893 Te Kooti Arikirangi Te Turuki lay dying on Hokianaga Island. When his end was near he was taken to the nearby mainland, so that the island would not become tapu through death. Afterwards Te Turuki's body was brought back to the island and the mourners gathered for the tangi there.
