Even informed us at a roll call that we were likely to go down the coast,meaning thereby, with some expedition to a point farther South. So also,when Comrade Sam Fish was constructing the heating apparatus in earlyNovember, for the hospital tent at Camp Sackett, he was told it would be in use only a few days. Subsequent events proved the report to have beenentirely erroneous or that the plans were changed. This trench was lined with stones and covered with sheet iron. Atone end of the trench, outside of the tent, a large pit was excavated and hnedwith brick and mortar, and covered with a brick arch. In this pit, whichconnected with the trench, the fire was built, and at the other end of thetrench outside of the tent, there was a brick chimney. The heat and smokefrom the fire passed through the trench, heating the iron covering, fromwhich radiated the heat that warmed the hospital and maintained an eventemperature and kept the inmates comfortable.
