July 1971 - Mermaid rock, Bondi Beach, Australia,(when the mermaids were still intact). The rock (235 tons) itself was allegedly washed ashore during a storm on 15th July 1912. The mermaids were created by sculptor Lyall Randolph (installed 3 April 1960) were modelled on two local women Jan Carmody, (Miss Australia Surf 1959) and Lynette Whillier, (champion swimmer and runner-up in the same contest.). Lynette was lost to the sea in 1974, the other with one arm missing was removed in 1976 and is preserved in Waverley library. Both were made from bronze coloured fiberglass.
