Orchid flowers. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of flowers of a ladies' tresses orchid (Spiranthes sp.). The spiral arrangement of the flowers around the stem is characteristic of this genus. There are about 300 Spiranthes species. They are found throughout the northern hemisphere, in both grassland and woodland habitats.
