Colmar, Alsace, Grand Est, France: Half-timbered houses in the historic heart of Colmar with features typical of traditional Alsatian architecture such as jettied facades on exposed joists, a shingled roof and timber framing in two distinct styles, straight timbers on the two buildings to the left and sculpted woodwork on the far building in the style of Fachwerk timbering once common in nearby Germany. This view from the Grand’Rue includes (centre) the gabled and shuttered Restaurant au Fer Rouge, with an intricate wrought iron sign hanging above the street, and the pink-washed Fachwerk-style facade of a house with green shutters in Rue des Marchands that dates from the late-16th century or 1500s. Many medieval and Renaissance houses and other properties are preserved in Colmar’s historic centre. The city on the Upper Rhine has a rich heritage of ancient houses built in the Alsatian vernacular, with more than 100 buildings and other objects registered or classified as historic monuments.
