Macrauchenia. Artist's impression of a herd of Macrauchenia, an extinct prehistoric mammal that lived 7 million to 20,000 years ago. Macrauchenia was a herbivore descended from a group of extinct South American hoofed animals known as litopterns. Fossil evidence of the skull suggested that it had a long muscular proboscis on it's face. Macrauchenia was an extremely agile runner, able to twist and turn to avoid predators. It stood metres tall at the shoulder.
