Campo del Cielo meteorite fragment. This is a fragment of an iron meteorite, a type of meteorite that originates from the core of protoplanets that were created and destroyed in the early history of the solar system. This sample, which weighs kilograms, is from the Campo del Cielo meteorite that fell in northern Argentina around 4500 years ago. The metallic surface has been melted and reformed by the heat generated as it passed through the Earth's atmosphere.
