I Facts Affecting the Car Shortage THE chart on the opposite page shows the averagecarload, tons, and average miles per car perday, , for the month of October, 1916. Com-paring this with previous performances, the average carloaddecreased 2 per cent, over September, 1916, and 4 per cent,over October, 1915, and the average miles per car per dayincreased per cent, and per cent, respectively. The decrease in average carload in October is reflectedin an increased car shortage compared with previous months,particularly in the coal mining districts. An analysis showsthat the loading of mine products decreased per cent,over September, 1916, and per cent, over October, 1915,while the loading of all other products increased percent, and 9 per cent, respectively. The per cent, of loadedcar miles to the total increased from per cent, to cent., which indicates a greater number of cars underload and a correspondingly less number of empty cars avail-able fo
