The picturesque beauty of Lake Ashi and the numerous hot springs of this area contributed to the popularity of Hakone as a tourist destination. Hakone was a key police checkpoint where travelers to Edo were inspected to ensure that firearms and other prohibited goods were not brought in. Hakone was also known during the Edo period for its fine woodworkers who catered to the tourist market and for an unusual species of salamander that was resistant to fire.'
