Femoral nerve block. Anaesthetist injecting anaesthetic into patient's groin to administer a femoral nerve block prior knee surgery. The anaesthetic will block the nerves which serve the knee. A nerve block is often combined with a general anaesthetic. This allows the strength and amount of anaesthetic to be reduced, therefore reducing any risks associated with the drugs. It also provides longer-lasting pain-relief after the surgery than just a general anaesthetic alone.
