Captain McDougall entered the regular service assecond lieutenant Fourteenth Infantry May 10, 1866;was transferred to the Thirty-second Infantry Septem-ber 21, 1866; was promoted first lieutenant November5, 1866; was again transferred to the Twenty-firstInfantry April 19, 1869; was unassigned October 21,1869; was assigned to the Seventh Cavalry December31, 1870; and was promoted captain December 15, 1875. When first assigned to the regular service, he wasordered to take recruits by sea from New York to Cali-. fornia, and after accomplishing that duty he served atnumerous posts until August, 1867, when he was changedto Arizona, and subsequently, in 1869, his station waschanged to Fort Vancouver. After being transferred tothe cavalry, he was with Stanleys Yellowstone Expedi-tion, escorting the Northern Pacific Railroad Survey,from May 7 to October 1, 1873. He was in the fieldalmost every summer while in the cavalry service, scout-ing, protecting construction trains, etc., etc. He partici-pated in engagements with Indians at Aravipa Canon,Tonto Basin, Point of Mountain, and Rock Springs,Arizona, and in action at the mouth of the Big Hornwith hostile Indians, August [I, 1873. While on Ku-Klux duty in the South, he had a skirmish withillicit distillers at McGownsville, and Limestone Springs,South Carolina, in 1871.
