If a heavy clay soil has been used and plenty of good cow manure mixed with it, it is seldom necessary to use any manure water until after the first of the year. However, if the foliage has a well-ripened and leathery ap- pearance, with the wood turning a reddish hue, with small buds, it is a sure sign that they require nourish- ment, and there is nothing that can quite take the place of manure water. Cow manure we find preferable to any other, and it should be used as fresh as it can be procured. Sheep manure is also good, but one must be careful not to use it too strong—about a peck of sheep manure to 50 gallons of wa- ter will make a solution strong enough for the first watering, and a peck and a half for normal strength. It is hard to get cow manure water too strong, and when the clear liquid is about the color of strong coffee it will be about right. The liquids should stand for about a week before using and should be stirred frequently to get the full strength from the manure.
