The Fortress of Saint John of the Harbor of Rio de Janeiro (Fortaleza de São João da Barra do Rio de Janeiro aka The Fort of Saint John (Fortaleza de São João) is a 16th-century star fort now situated in the military neighborhood of Urca in Rio de Janeiro. It was built by the Portuguese soldier Estácio de Sá to protect Guanabara Bay from the French who had settled here under Nicolas Durand de Villegaignon in the 1550s. It is now the headquarters of the Brazilian Army's Physical Training Programme (Centro de Capacitação Física do Exército)
