The cloud mass associated with Hurricane Fefa, photographed by the crew of Shuttle Atlantis during Mission STS-43 of 2-11 August 1991. At this point, the hurricane was centered 1,000km east of Taiwan in the Pacific Ocean. The 'eye' of the hurricane is particularly well-defined, showing very little cloud. The wall of the 'eye' extends from about 1,000m above the sea to well over 14,000m. Hurricanes, or tropical cyclones, are found in regions at least 5 degrees latitude above the equator where the sea surface temperature is at least 27 Celsius. Wind speeds in the outer part of the hurricane can easily exceed 200km per hour.
