P. steam chest in changing fromsimple to compound, whereby the cylinder becomes lame for severalrevolutions, until the receiver pressureis restored to normal, which progressesgradually by gains of H. P. exhaustover that removed by the L. P. cylin-der, stroke by stroke. These condi-tions are illustrated in diagram Fig. 4. The Rhode Island compound is auto-matic in starting and convertible intosimple by means of letting live steaminto a chamber above the intercepting.
