Bubble Nebula, NGC 7635, Caldwell 11

Hubble space telescope (HST) optical image of the Bubble nebula (NGC 7635), partially seen in lower frame. The Bubble itself (blue) is some 6 light years across. It represents the shock front of a huge star's solar wind ploughing into the surrounding nebula and causing it to glow. The bright region at lower right is not inside the expanding bubble, but is pressed against the shock front. The gaseous pillars at top left are illuminated by light from the central star, which travels much faster than the shock front. The Bubble nebula lies 7100 light years from Earth in the constellation Cassiopeia.
