Composite coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of rhabdovirus particles on the surface of a dying astroglial cell (astrocyte). There are holes in the cell membrane due to the cell death process. Rabies is a viral disease that causes acute encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) in warm-blooded animals, including humans. The disease is zoonotic, that is, it can be transmitted from one animal species to another, such as from dogs to humans. The rabies virus can be transmitted by a bite from an infected animal. The virus infection travels to the brain by following the peripheral nerves. Magnification: x80,000 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
