The accompanying illustration shows a special cylinder boringmachine, designed by the Newton Machine Tool Works, Inc.,Philadelphia, for boring any class of simple or compound enginecylinders and piston valve chambers at one setting. It is saidthat a simple cylinder and valve chamber can be bored in fivehours. Where inclined cylinders are used an auxiliary tablemay be furnished which can be swiveled to bore at an angle of20 degrees. After a cylinder has been planed it is placed on parallel stripson the table of the boring machine, and by means of the vertical,transverse and longitudinal adjustments the high and lowpressure cylinders and valve chamber of a compound locomotivemay be bored at one setting. This insures the alignment of thecylinders, and by the use of gauges the proper distance betweencenters may be maintained. A typical example of
