The caption for this 1902 image reads: The Country Boy at the District School. It complemented the chapter Fun Out of school in the memoir Being a Boy by Charles Dudley Warner. "Being A Boy" (published 1878) is Warner's profound and entertaining memoir of his childhood spent growing up on a Massachusetts farm. Warner (1829 -1900) was an American novelist and essayist. He was a close friend of Mark Twain, and co-authored "The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today" with him.
