Minamoto Yorimitsu, Legend of Shuten Doji

Entitled: "Minamoto Yorimitsu (Raiko Sitenno) and the head of the demon Shutendoji." Shows Minamoto no Yorimitsu (Raiko) with four hand-picked warriors to help him fight the Oe Mountain demon, Shutendoji, whose head appears in the middle panel with Raiko. Minamoto no Yorimitsu (948 - August 29, 1021), also known as Minamoto no Raiko, served the regents of the Fujiwara clan along with his brother Yorinobu, taking the violent measures the Fujiwara were themselves unable to take. He is one of the earliest Minamoto of historical note for his military exploits, and is known for quelling the bandits of Oeyama. Shuten-doji is a mythical oni leader who lived in Mt. Ooe. Woodcut, no artist credited, circa 1818-30.
