Hurricane Isabel on the east coast of the USA. This image was taken at 15:55 GMT on 18th September 2003. The hurricane covers much of the east coast, with the strongest winds centred on North Carolina. The Florida peninsula is at lower left. Hurricane Isabel was classified as a category 5 hurricane, the strongest type, a few days before it hit the coast. Although it had weakened a little by this time, its winds were still constant at over 160 kilometres per hour, with stronger gusts. This image was taken by the MODIS instrument on board the Terra satellite.
