Andrea VercelH are arranged Pisanfashion and do not ramp with the gables. The wide pedimental gable end at S. Ambrogio is low- widepitched, covering both nave and aisles, and is partly centalconcealed by the abutting atrium, which disguises what ^^^^would otherwise have been an awkward proportion. Asimilar wide pedimental fa9ade at the two churches in Pavia Paviawhich have been mentioned has a very bare, unsatisfactoryappearance, only partly relieved by the practicable gallerythat ramps with the gable, and the small windows whichare the only other features except the doorways. Onecannot but feel how very far in point of grace and come- Rudenessliness this North Lombard work is behind the Pisan bardTorkRomanesque of half a century or more before.
