"Inside" view of the courtyard of Sumela Monastery, after the main entrance gate. Trabzon, Turkey.

This is the first "inside" view of the courtyard of Sumela Monastery, after the visitor has passed the main entrance gate to the Monastery. On the left side of the photo, you can see the facade of the main cave-church of the monastery, fully covered with frescoes. Sumela Monastery (called by the locals "Meryemana") was for centuries, since the byzantine years and until 1922, when the exchange of populations, between Greece and Turkey took place, the most important Greek-Orthodox monastery in the whole Black Sea region. Nowadays it's a museum.
