SMITH, was licensed to preach the gospel in1802, and then took up his residencein Allen township, becoming pastor ofeight congregations, Salems Reformedof Moore being one of them, and ofwhich his father had been the previouspastor. He was an excellent linguist,well versed in German, French, Latin,Greek and Hebrew. He composedmany hymns and poems. On certainoccasions, when no hymn-book wasnear, he composed a suitable was gifted with a voice that couldbe heard above all others in a multi-tude, and generally was his own chor-ister in the congregations. When al-ready confined to bed during his lastsickness, the sons of Rev. WilliamHiester of Lebanon, requested him towrite some verses for their fatherstombstone, which he did.
