Active Sun and solar flare, Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) ultraviolet image. The solar flare is the bright flash at centre right, with a burst of solar material erupting into space below it. The SDO is an Earth-orbiting spacecraft launched in 2010 by NASA and used to observe the Sun. Here, the Sun and its atmosphere (not seen in visible light) is seen in a view that combines ultraviolet wavelengths of 131, 171 and 304 angstroms, obtained with the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) sensor. This flare occurred on 2 October 2014. It was classified as an flare. M-class flares are one-tenth as powerful as the most powerful flares, which are designated X-class flares. For a close-up view of the flare, see image C045/6032.
