The Mombasa tusks (or Mapemba ya Ndovu or Pembe za Ndovu ¬ the Swahili for elephant tusks), a monument over Moi Avenue, Mombasa, Kenya pictured in 1967. Built in 1952 to a commemorate visit by the British royal family, the arch originally comprised two wood and canvas tusk structures. When the road was expanded into two carriageways, a new set of four weather-resistant aluminium tusks were built in 1956 by the city council. They then formed the letter ‘M’. This image is from an old amateur 35mm Kodak colour transparency – a vintage 1960s photograph.
