Erelong the Sinnington pack were—if not altogether level atthe outset—a very different lot to that which Mr. Kendallfound on taking the reins of office. Two hounds, of whichhe was particularly fond, because of their excellence in noseand speed, were Royal and Ruby, which invariably led thepack. There is a quaint oil painting of him stillextant at Ness Hall, but the only record I can discover ofhis characteristics is what Miss Katherine Duncombe tells us In looking down a list of Sinnington huntsmen two names standout from the rest—those of Jimmy Gowland (Golden) and Jack former, of whom a quaint old oil-painting exists in the district,was huntsman for forty-six years—during the close of the eighteenth
