One of two lions, sculpted in red marble, at the west portal to the Romanesque Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta at Bolzano, Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy. The lion is crazed with cracks, discoloured by time and scarred by bombing in World War II.
Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta, Bolzano, South Tyrol, Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy: marble lion at entrance. The cathedral, known to German-speaking Roman Catholics as Dompfarrkirche Maria Himmelfahrt, stands on the site of an early Christian basilica. It was enlarged in Romanesque style and re-dedicated in 1180 before gaining a Gothic appearance between 1380 and 1420. The ornate 65m-high open fretwork spire, added in 1517, features gargoyles judged masterpieces of High or Flamboyant Gothic sculpture and architecture.
