Meckel diverticulum, light micrograph. Meckel diverticulum is the most common congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract and is caused by an incomplete obliteration of the omphalomesenteric duct. The mucosal lining of the diverticulum may have a mixture of native ileal mucosa (left) and heterotopic mucosa, most commonly gastric (right).
