Gross specimen of a human kidney in a case of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). This is the left kidney split in half showing an almost complete replacement of the kidney parenchyma by many large cysts. The renal pelvis can be seen at centre. ADPKD is caused by mutations in PKD genes that produce a specific abnormal protein that has an adverse effect on tubule development.
