Wilhelm Griesinger. Portrait of Wilhelm Griesinger (1817-68), German psychiatrist who pioneered the use of clinical methods in the subject. Griesinger's major work was Die Pathologie und Therapie der Psychischen Krankheiten (The pathology and treatment of mental diseases, 1845). This influential book claimed that mental conditions were largely the result of lesions in the brain. After the book's publication, Griesinger did not practice psychiatry for over twenty years.
