. Engineering and Contracting . orizedby the building department of New York City, has just beenerected by the Electric Welding Co. of America as an addi-tion to its plant in the Borough of Brooklyn. This steel con-struction has been accomplished without the use of rivetsor bolts and with practically no fabrication necessary. Before the company could proceed with its building plans,it was necessary to obtain permission from the various citybuilding departments, and such permission would only begiven if certain tests were made which would satisfy thebuilding officials, that a welded structure would be absolutelysafe and would compare favorably in all other respects witha riveted steel framework. Certain samples of welded jointswere requested for tests as to strain, compressing and shear-ing. A specific sample of a lap weld of 1% in. x %-in. bars, theends lapped 1% in. and welded across the edges, was sub-mitted. This welded sample was put in the machine in di-rect tension and developed the full strength of the bar as. Test of a 40-ft. Span Electrically Welded Steel Roof break occurred in the bar :! in. above the wekl and de-veloped a strength close to 60,000 lb. per square inch with-out affecting the weld. These welds were cut across, butshowed no line of demarkation between the welding metaland the original bar metal. Another sample consisted of two angles set at right anglesand lap welded at the intersection, the 3-in. legs vertical2x3x%. This sample was set in the machine so that therewas a horizontal lever arm of 8 in. from the center of pressureto the center of weld and intersection, and developed a beamload of lb. at the weld or a torsional stress of at the weld with no apparent distress to the weld. Tlieangles buckled to such an extent that they failed to resistpressure. The tests of these samples were entirely satisfactory tothe building officials. Permission was subsequently givento proceed with the erection of the steel framework,
