In this joust in front of the royal tent, Sir Mador's spear (right) breaks to pieces and Launcelot's holds intact.

In Arthurian legend and according to Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur, Sir Mador had accused Queen Guinevere of treason and demanded a trial by combat. The queen had Sir Bors defend her honor and King Arthur did as well, but Bors went to find Launcelot to fight and just before the joust Launcelot came up, incognito, and took Bors place. This 1917 illustration shows the joust in front of the royal tent, with Sir Mador's spear breaking to pieces and Launcelot's holding intact. The illustration is from "The Boy's King Arthur" (1917) by Thomas Malory and Sidney Lanier and illustrations by Wyeth.
