Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Thermophilic zygomycete fungus (Rhizomucor pusillus). This thermophilic zygomycete is readily recognizable by its characteristic, grey to greyish brown colored mycelium and by the development of yellow-brown sporangiophores (fruiting structures). Seen here are 3 sporangiophores (sporangia) and numerous spores (sporangiospores). Sporangia are generally globose with an oval or pear-shaped columella. The genus Rhizomucor is distinguished from the genus Mucor by the presence of stolons and poorly developed rhizoids at the base of the sporangiophores. Rhizomucor pusillus is a rare human pathogen, causing pulmonary or cutaneous types of infection. It is more often associated with animal disease. R. pusillus has a worldwide distribution and is commonly associated with compost heaps. Magnification: x160 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
