The piston on the horizontal cylinderis fitted with a spring somewhat heavier than that on the up-right piston, and therefore when equal air pressure is admittedto both cylinders, the upper forming piece comes into placea little ahead of the lower one. A small engineers valve isused to control the air to the cylinders of the press. After the straight part of the coils has been covered withpaper the coils are passed along to the taping table which isin charge of two young women. Here the straight portionsare wound with fish cloth. The final covering is made bywinding white cotton web tape all the way around the coiland doubling it on those sections which are to lie within the. Cincinnati Shops—Two-Cylinder Armature Coil Press slots. Before taping, the coils are dipped and allowed to dry,and after taping they are given a second dipping. The coil-taping machines and power-operated winding formsare driven from a shaft extending under a large table in thecenter of the room. This shaft is in turn driven by a 5-hpWestinghouse motor which stands on the floor under the table. April 2, 1910.] ELECTRIC RAILWAY JOURNAL. 58i Field coils that have been burned out in service are util-ized and the wire re-insulated if not too badly damaged. Bymeans of home-made devices, as shown in the illustration onpage 583, the wire is cleaned and retaped as it is wound ontoa power-driven form. About $ is saved on each coilby this process. The winding lathe used in this work is similarto that used in winding armature coils. It was designed andbuilt in these shops. It is driven by a belt from a drivingshaft in the winding room.
