Professor Sir Roger Penrose (born 1931), British mathematician, physicist, philosopher and author. Penrose is Professor of Mathematics at the Mathematics Institute, University of Oxford, UK. His research work specialises in the study of mathematical physics. In 1974, he discovered the geometric formation now known as Penrose tilings where two tiles of a particular shape can be used to produce complex, non-repeating patterns. Penrose has also worked on black holes, cosmology, quantum mechanics and human consciousness. He has won numerous awards, including the Wolf Prize, the Dirac Medal and the Copley Medal. He was knighted for services to science in 1994. Photographed in 2009.
