Metapleural sculpture (Fig. 4a-f) The sculpture of the metapleuron varies from almost completely areolate rugose to smooth with scattered punctures. A few species including A stigmaha\e the metapleuron densely punctate. Pharpa has scattered weak punctures and a few rugae ventrally on the metapleuron. This is also the most widespread state in the Agathidinae and it is therefore considered to be plesiomorphic for Alabagrus. Propodeal sculpture (Figs 7a-10f) An areolated propodeum is the ground-plan state for Alabagrus. This is the condition present in Pharpa, most genera of Agathidinae, and many other braconids and ichenumonids. In the ground-plan there are four major carinae, two longitudinal and two transverse, with the longitudinal carina fusing anteriorly. These carinae are named and labelled in Fig. 7a. Propodeal sculpture varies considerably in Alabagrus and it is one of the most important characters for species recognition. The sculpture is often reduced (Figs 7b, d), and all conceivable intermediates between completely areolate (Fig. 7a) and completely smooth (Fig. 10c) are present. The sculpture of the propodeum is often (70%) a sexually dimorphic character. In species where the.
