Thereare 27 sections of 8 aeroplanes, 10 cavalry sections of 3 aeroplaneseach, and 11 fortress sections of 8 aeroplanes each, represent-ing a total of 334 aeroplanes. The aeronautical corps also owns14 dirigibles. The gendarmerie is a force of military jjolice recniited 270 COUNTRIES INVOLVED from the army but performing civil duties in time of peace. Theirstrength is about 21,700 men. The Garde Republicaine, anotherpolice force, performs duties in Paris similar to those of the gen-darmerie in the departments. Its strength is about 3,000, of whomabout 800 are mounted. In 1913 there was a great development of the Boy Scouts. They. A Battery of Frances Wonderful Field Artillery are recruited from all members of society and participate in the re-unions and exercises organized bj the Comite Central. The military law of 1913 made the length of service three yearsin the active army; eleven years in the reserve; seven j^ears in theterritorial army; and seven years in the reserve of the territorialarmy. The peace strength of the metropolitan ai-my comprises 25,695officers, 483,768 men; the colonial army (in France), 1,891 officersand 25,672 men. The gendarmerie.
