The bow and arrow appeared around the transition from Upper Palaeolithic to the Mesolithic, about 10,000 years ago. It was an indispensable weapon to hunters and warriors from the prehistoric times of the Stone Age until the 16th century AD when the use of gunpowder became widespread. Through time the designs, particularly in the case of the arrows, varied according to the hunters probable quarries which ranged from birds and smaller mammals to large forest animals.
