Termini railway station (Stazione Termini) 1950. Ancient rail operating centre tower. Overhead contact electric train line. Rome, Italy, Europe, EU.

Termini railway station (Stazione Termini), Rome. Rail operating centre tower housing the ancient control room with the Central Electrical Apparatus (Cabina Ace: Apparato Centrale Elettrico) that regulated railway traffic. A masterpiece of electromechanics in operation for over 60 years. The tower is about 20 meters high and 40 meters long. To manage the movement of trains teams of more than 60 railwaymen climbed every day to about 20 meters high, in the tower that was 40 meters long. Roma Termini (Stazione Termini) is the main railway station of Rome. It is named after the district of the same name, which in turn took its name from ancient Thermal Baths of Diocletian (in Latin, thermae), which lie across the street from the main entrance. On 25 February 1863, Pope Pius IX opened the first, temporary Termini Station. The current building was designed by two selected teams: Leo Calini, Eugenio Montuori and Massimo Castellazzi, Vasco Fadigati, Achille Pintonello, Annibale Vitellozzi. It was inaugurated in 1950. Architecturally, the building punctuates the sense of both modern and traditional, looking forward to the future as well as remembering its history. Its bold presence in the urban fabric expresses the diversity of the City's history and speaks of the dramatic new scale of the modern industrial economy of Italy. The station has regular train services to all major Italian cities, as well as daily international services. With 33 platforms and over 150 million passengers each year, Roma Termini is the second largest railway station in Europe after Paris Gare du Nord. Termini is also the main hub for public transport inside Rome. On 23 December 2006, the station was dedicated to Pope John Paul II.
