BEER. THE thought of Matthew Arnold that bodilyhealth and vigor are not to be classedwith wealth and population, or mere machinery,appeals to us in theory. The latter is valuablefor its own sake ; the former because it claspshands with the immortal life of the mind andsoul. How is it in practice ? Every nerve is strainedin the acquisition of money; civilization isalarmed when the death rate of a communityfalls below that of-its births; choice bits ofmachinery are polished to a high degree of per-fection, and safely housed from wind and storm, but what of the individual child? In utter dis-regard of health and bodily development he isoften allowed to share the family beer-mug,drain the sugar in his fathers glass of whiskey,and sip so-called sweet cider at pleasure.
