This disasterinflicted a rude blow on the confidence ofLi and his assistants; and it was resolvedthat nothing should be attempted until theEnglish officer, at last appointed, had as-sumed the active command. Gordon in Command. Such was the position of affairs when on24th of March, 1863, Major Gordon tookcommand of the Ever-Victorious Army. Atthat moment it was not merely discouragedby its recent reverses, but it was discontentedwith its position, and when Major Gordonassumed the command at Sunkiang therewas some fear of an immediate new commander succeeded in allaying.
