Gnaeus Pompey Magnus (106 BC – 48 BC), aka Pompey the Great, was a military and political leader of the late Roman Republic. His success as a general while still young enabled him to advance directly to his first consulship without meeting the normal requirements for office. In 51 BCE Pompey was moving towards a power struggle with Marcus Porcius Cato Uticensis (95 BC – 46 BC), aka Cato the Younger who was noted for his lengthy conflict with Julius Caesar, as well as his immunity to bribes, moral integrity and distaste for the ubiquitous corruption of the period. The bone of contention between the two men was the troops they both commanded. The rift between Pompey and Cato was exacerbated when Pompey fell seriously ill in Naples in 50 BC. Upon his recovery, (seen here) the people of Naples offered thanksgiving sacrifices, and he was feted in towns as he travelled back to Rome.
