Earth's oceans, rivers and lakes. Map of the Earth, centred on the American continents, showing land, oceans, seas, continental shelves, rivers and lakes. Land is white, deep water is blue, and shallow water is light green. The continental shelves are areas of land that were flooded at the end of the last glacial period when sea levels rose. A return to an ice age would see continental shelves exposed as sea levels fall. A period of global warming would see more land flooded as sea levels rose. The Earth's surface area of about 510 million square kilometres is 70% salt water (65% deep ocean, 5% continental shelf). Land, rivers and lakes make up 30% of the surface area. This map is a cylindrical projection.
