This area of the town, opposite the castle gate, was once the site of “the Papegault Shooting” or “Le Tir au Papegault”, where a shooting competition was held.

This area is immediately opposite the gate of the Château de Josselin and a plaque on the left of this image explains its history. Headed “Le Tir au Papegault” or “The Papegault Shooting”, the plaque explains: “a site planted with trees constituted the Josselin mall until the 18th century. Papegault was raised there in May. It was a wooden bird painted in bright colors, fixed to the end of a pole or above a tower on the rampart. The best shooters in the city competed with the arquebus on this target. The winner was crowned King of Papegault in great jubilation. During the year of his reign, he benefited from an exemption from taxes, logs, watches and guards and received the right to bring into town 20 barrels of wine which he could sell as he wished.” Josselin is about 80 km west of Rennes.
