Bolster chisel and club hammer. The materials used in these two devices are an efficient combination. The weight and hardness of the tempered steel head of the hammer (bottom) produces great force. Its graphite (carbon) shaft (not seen) reduces vibrations from the blows. The chrome vanadium steel blade of the bolster chisel (centre) is a hard material resistant to wear, meaning that its edge does not need regular re-sharpening.
