Insulin pump attached to the abdomen of a 37 year old woman. The pump is used to treat type 1 diabetes mellitus, a metabolic disorder in which the pancreas does not produce the hormone insulin, which regulates blood sugar levels. The pump delivers a constant very small dose of insulin and also a larger dose before meals or when the blood glucose levels need correcting. The dose given before a meal is determined by the patient's blood sugar level and the amount of carbohydrates in the meal.
