Amsterdam St Nicolaaskerk Basilica of Saint Nicholas. Dutch: Sint-Nicolaasbasiliek.

Amsterdam St Nicolaaskerk Basilica of Saint Nicholas view from the Oudezijds Voorburgwal. In 1887 a new Roman Catholic Church of St Nicholas was build 250m north from the old one, now called Oude Kerk or Old Church, on the same canal. The Church of St Nicholas (Dutch: Sint Nicolaaskerk) is since December 2012 officially the Basilica of Saint Nicholas (Basilica Minor). In Dutch there are quite a few names in use for this church. The official name is H.(Heilige) Nicolaas binnen de Veste, which translates as Saint Nicholas Within the Walls. Most Amsterdammers will still call it the Sint-Nicolaaskerk or simply the Nicolaaskerk (Nicholas-church). However when the Roman Congregatio de Cultu Divino et Disciplina Sacramentorum on December 8, 2012 elevated it to a Basilica Minor, the official name became the Basiliek van de Heilige Nicolaas (Basilica of Saint Nicholas). Colloquially: Sint-Nicolaasbasiliek. H. Mass is read in English Spanish and Dutch. There is Choral Evensong Saturday at 17:00 (not in August and September) and Gregorian Vespers Sunday at 17:00 (not in July and August). - [info: ]
